A Friend Like Simon

Cecelia's Senior Infants started Human Rights Month a day early!  After lunch today, we read 'A Friend Like Simon' by Kate Gaynor. This was a lovely story all about having friends that might act a little differently but appreciating them for their uniqueness.  It also reminded us about how important it is to be nice to everyone - even if they don't always do what you expect!

Numbers in the Teens (Have a group of TEN!)

We also learned today that numbers in the teens have a group of ten cubes and some extra cubes! This was another really fun song from Harry's Kindergarten Music!

Pussy Cat, Pussy Cat

We watched this video about Pussy Cat, Pussy Cat today. Can you remember the rhyme? :-)

Senior Infant Orchestra!

We had our very own orchestra in class today! Everyone got an instrument and we all had to keep a steady beat with the music. Some people got it straight away, others need a little bit more practice but everyone had great fun with the instruments!

New Tricky Word Songs - said, here and there!

The Marvellous Melting Icemen!

In Science on Wednesday, we met Copernicus. He's a scientist and he loves to hear us talking about all our different ideas in science.

Together, we carried out the experiment that we had planned on Monday.

We put three cubes of ice into each bottle and wrapped one of them in cotton wool.

We even put some cotton wool on top like a hat!

We learned that science always has to be FAIR so we made sure to put the same amount of ice into each bottle and to put them in the same place.

We worked hard while we were waiting for the icemen to melt.

When we checked them, the one without the coat had all melted but the one with the coat still had ice cubes in it!  We couldn't believe that the coat of cotton wool had actually made the snowman melt slower! Most of us had guessed faster!

It turns out cotton wool is an insulator - it keeps warm things warm and cold things cold!

Next week we'll be designing and making an insulating cover for our drinks so that we can keep them nice and cool to quench our thirst! Start thinking now about what you're going to use! :-)

Parent Information Meeting

Thanks to all the parents who attended the information meeting today in the classroom. If you were unable to attend (or have mislaid the booklet), digital copies of the sheets (and some additional information sheets also) have been uploaded under the Parent Information tab of the class website - betnsseniorinfants.weebly.com.
Thanks again.  Your attendance is greatly appreciated.

Melting Snowmen!

We were doing some more work about heat today in science. We looked at a Concept Cartoon all about putting a coat on a snowman.

Then we made hypotheses about what we thought would happen.

Finally, we planned an experiment to try to see what would actually happen.

Since it's not snowing outside, we're going to make 'icemen' in bottles instead (so it doesn't make such a big mess!)

We're excited to see how it turns out tomorrow!

What do you think will happen?

What do you think?

Our water experiment from yesterday looks different today. Why do you think that is?

Tricky Word Games

In stations today, we were doing a wordsearch with our tricky words. If you want to play it again, click here

You can also play another game where you need to find the correct tricky word here...

...and one where you need to type it in here!!

Finally, there's a great unscrambling game here!

Heat!

We were learning about heat today in science. We talked all about hot and cold weather, hot and cold food, what we do if we feel too hot or cold and also hot and cold water. Then we did an experiment to see what happens if you put hot and cold water into a big tub of water.

1. First we filled the tub with room temperature water.

2. Then we put red food colouring in the hot water and blue food colouring in the cold water.

3. When they were ready, we put the two jars into the big tub.  The coloured water started to move out of the jars.

5.  After a while, all the red water had moved to the top of the tub and the blue water had moved to the bottom.

From watching this, we learned that hot things (liquid and air) go up and blue things go down!

It was great fun!

It's Raining, It's Pouring!

Here is our nursery rhyme for this week!

Dressing for the weather!

We were learning all about choosing the right kinds of clothes to suit the weather. Imagine if the three bears from the Goldilocks story were going for a walk on a sunny day... or on a rainy day..... or on a cold snowy day!  What would they wear?

Here are some great games that let you learn all about just that!

Picnic with the Junior Infants

Today was a very exciting day!  We had a picnic lunch outside with the junior infants since the weather was so nice.

We also played outside with the junior infants for the very first time!

Rory and Izzy found an unusual insect on the school window.

We were very excited by all the goings on so we did some meditation after break to calm ourselves down.  It was lovely.

Maths on Monday!

In maths today, we had great fun learning the chicken counting song...

We also played Likki Likki Lox, where you have to guess how many blocks are hidden in the box... (There are always 5 to begin with)

We finished off with some great work in our maths books!
