Adding Machine

In maths, we played this game to practise our adding.

This was a good revision as lots of us had forgotten things over the spring holidays!

You can play it again here!

London Bridge is Falling Down

Our nursery rhyme for the week is 'London Bridge is Falling Down'.

There are lots of different versions of this rhyme so if you know a different one, be sure to let us know! :-)

A Busy Busy Day!

Today was a very busy day in senior infants!

Check out some of the things we got up to!

We also had art today!

We made the most beautiful collages of owls (as inspired by the book Owl Babies).

They are really fantastic and are going to look great up on our art display board!

We're Famous Photographers!

Exciting news!

We're famous photographers!

Our Greenwave photo of a primrose has been chosen to be aired on 3e Weather news tonight, Thursday 10.04.14 at 6.30pm.

Keep an eye out for it!

Buddy Reading - Reading for Fluency

We had another session of buddy reading today.

Everyone really enjoys it when Orlagh's class come in because they are such kind and helpful teachers.

Hopefully some of them will think about being teachers when they grow up - they'd be really excellent!

Conserving Water

For the past few weeks, our Learn Together assemblies have been focussing on water.

Today was the final day when we looked at all the different ways to conserve and protect water.

We learned a lot about what wastes water and also what pollutes water (makes it dirty).

Everyone in senior infants is going to try very hard to be a Wise Water User!

If you need a bit of revision on how to do this, have a look at the scene below!

Our Awesome Letters!

We learned how to write letters today!

You have to write the date on the right, the 'Dear someone' part on the left and start in the middle of the first line.

There was lots to remember but Cecelia couldn't believe how excellent they all were!

We've come a long way since the start of the year.

Really getting ready for first class now!

Our Awesome Letters

Day and Night

Today we were learning about day and night. We brainstormed all the different things we knew about day and all the things we thought of when we imagined night. Then we put our words into a Tagxedo to see what it looked like. It was really pretty!

We choose the rooster for daytime because he crows in the morning and a star for the night-time words because the stars come out at night!

Then we looked at a programme called Stellarium. This is really cool because it lets you fast forward time so that you can see the stars - even in the middle of the day!

We looked at Mars (which is really bright at the moment - and a little bit orangey),

Ursa Major or the Big Bear (which has the Plough/Saucepan in it)

and the North Star (which always shows you the way north and never moves - even if you fast forward through three days and nights!).

You can find the North Star by drawing an imaginary line up from the two stars that make the side of the saucepan in Ursa Major.

The North Star is also called Polaris - kinda like the North Pole!

Horse Chestnut Bud Burst!

Spring has really hit Balbriggan this week!

We saw the primroses last week, a hawthorn bud burst and we noticed on Friday that the horse chestnut was really close to opening.

And then.... this morning when we checked, the bud had burst!

Check it out here!

Now we need to look out for the bud burst of the ash and the arrival of the swallow!

And The Lucky Attendees Are.....

Since our blog was short-listed for the Junior Spiders, our class have been invited to attend the award ceremony.

However, the venue unfortunately only has enough space for four children for each entry.

Cecelia just wasn't able to choose who should go so she got 'The Randomizer' to choose for her!

The lucky attendees are.....

We're very excited about the ceremony!!!

Little Miss Muffet

This week we’ll learn Little Miss Muffet. Here is the traditional version of the rhyme.

Here’s a different version of the rhyme where Miss Muffet isn’t scared of the spider…

And here’s a Sesame Street cartoon based around the rhyme!

Faith Ringgold

We've spent the last two weeks learning about the American artist Faith Ringgold.

Faith is a great inspiration because not only is she a wonderful artist but she also worked hard through her life to bring about equality for African Americans and women.
She's a real life human rights defender!

She is very famous for her story quilts (like Tar Beach).

We used these quilts as inspiration for our own art.

We chose our favourite memory and surrounded it by the nicest pattern we could think of.

Our story quilts came out great! Check them out here!

Field Trip to the Hedgerow

Today we went on a field trip to the hedgerow.

We drew some things from the natural environment and also listed some things that didn't belong.  We also did a survey on the plants we saw - hawthorn, brambles, dandelion and goose grass/robin run the hedge.

We also saw some signs of spring.  We found lots of primroses.  There were lots of beautiful ladybirds on them.

We saw a dandelion flower too.  Dandelion comes from the French name for the plant 'dan de lion' which means the teeth of the lion.

We also saw a hawthorn bud burst.  This was very exciting as it was another of the signs of spring we were looking out for as part of the Greenwave project!

We saw lots of brambles on the field trip too.  We even spotted two snails on one of the leaves.

We really loved goose grass because it is so sticky.  Cecelia said that she used to stick this on her brother's back when they were children and we all had great fun trying this out on each other!

Ordinal Numbers Are All Around Us!

We've been learning about ordinal numbers in maths all week.

 Guess what!

They're all around us!

Check out our video!

Tricky Words - right and two

This week we were learning the tricky words right and two.

Two is tricky because it sounds just like 'to'.

It's tough to remember that the number two has a silent w!

Visitors from ALL over the World!

Our blog has had visitors from ALL over the world!

Look at all the flags we've collected!

We're learning how to be very cosmopolitan global citizens. :-)

The Water Cycle

We were learning about the water cycle in assembly today.

We were all disgusted to realise that the water we were drinking might one time have been inside an animal - and might even have been urinated out by it! YUCK!!!

Luckily the water is cleaned before it gets to us!

The journey of a drop of water was really interesting though.

If you want to go on another journey, click the picture below.

(You might need an adult's help to get past the quiz questions at each stage.)

Aimsir

An seachtain seo, bhímid ag foghlaim faoin Aimsir.

An féidir leat na focail sinne a chuimhniú?

We've been learning about weather this week.

Can you remember these words?

Muna féidir leat iad a chuimhniú, is féidir cuid díobh a athbhreithniú thíos anseo.

If you can't remember them, you can revise some of them here!

Is feidir an cuntas ranga a úsáid nó (níos fearr) cuntas a chruthú duit fein. Má tá cuntas pearsanta agat, cuimhníonn an súiomh na cinn nach bhfuil agat agus déanann tú níos mó cleachtadh orthu.

You can use the class account or (even better) create your own account. If you have a personal account, the site remembers which ones you don’t know and let’s you practise them more.

Buddy Reading Begins!

We finished our four weeks of buddy handwriting with Orlagh's fifth class so today we began doing some buddy reading.

We all switched partners so that we could get to know some new people.

Everyone worked really well together and we did some great reading!

It was great!

Very Exciting News! (Sticky Post)

Our senior infant blog – betnsseniorinfants.blogspot.ie has been shortlisted for the Eircom Junior Spiders Award

This means that it is one of the 7 best blogs in the whole country!!!

This is an excellent achievement and we’re very proud of ourselves!

The ceremony announcing the best blog will be held on April the 29th. Until then, we’d love to see lots and lots of visits and comments on our posts to show the judges how much we love using our class blog! Well done again everyone!

Sorting Living Things

In Science today, we were sorting living things into bird, insect, mammal and plant.

It was very funny because sometimes Cecelia would move the pen by accident and the creatures would escape and hide down the conveyor belt!

We laughed and laughed!

Ordinal Number Flower Show!

We were judges on an ordinal number flower show today!

We had to rate the flowers and decide which should come 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th.

The flowers were alien flowers though so they looked a bit weird!

If you want to play again, click on the picture!
