The Typewriter by Leroy Anderson

Today in music we were listening to 'The Typewriter' by Leroy Anderson. Some of us weren't too sure what a typewriter was so we watched an animation of the music to see what it was.

Here, you can see a real orchestra playing the piece.

You can use the class account or (even better) create your own account. If you have a personal account, the site remembers which ones you don’t know and let’s you practise them more.

Making Balbriggan from Clay

In Visual Art today, we used clay to make a model of Balbriggan.

First of all, we looked at photos of lots of different buildings and workplaces around Balbriggan. We each chose a different building and then we started to make it from clay.

We first made the clay into the correct shape by hitting the sides of the sphere off the table so it was more like a cube or cuboid. Then we moulded any extra features we needed - like the roof. Finally, we used clay tools to add some extra details to the building. We did a fantastic job!

Capital X

Today we learned how to write capital X.

X – A criss and a cross and in case you forgot, where is the treasure? X marks the spot!

Senses Stations!

On Thursday, we had stations in science.

We were learning all about our senses so we had 4 different stations focussing on four of our senses - taste, smell, sight and touch (we'll be doing hearing this week!).

Check out some of our photos!

It was a really fun lesson!

Our Little Red Hen Pizzas

Last week, we read the story of the Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza.

This was like the normal story of the Little Red Hen but instead of making bread, she made a pizza instead. It was a really lovely story so we decided to use it as inspiration for our art lesson.

We all got a paper plate and we used lots of different types of materials to create our very own pizza! It was a fun lesson!

Check out our masterpieces here!

Investigating with our senses!

In Science class today, we did an investigation using our senses. Copernicus had gotten a call from the manager of Tescos saying that people weren’t buying their muesli any more. He wanted us to help him find out why.

We examined the Tesco muesli with all of our senses – how it smelt, looked, sounded, felt and (most importantly!) tasted.  Here's what we said...

We thought it was nice but felt we could do a better job!

We used a selection of ingredients to create our very own muesli – bran flakes, oat flakes, flaked almonds, raisins and dried apricot.

We each decided what amount of each ingredient we would use (or none of some in the case of the people who didn’t like raisins!).

We all felt that the muesli we had made ourselves tasted better than the Tesco muesli. We just haven’t decided yet whether or not to give Tesco our fabulous new recipes….. :-)

Tricky Words - more and before

Our new tricky words are more and before.

Flight of the Bumblebee

Today in music we were listening to Flight of the Bumblebee. The music was really fast and swirly - like a bumble bee flying around. We also watched this video of Minnie Mouse conducting this piece. It was funny!
