Self Expression Day!

For Self Expression Day, we all chose clothes that told others something about our identity - sports we like, teams we follow, favourite things to do, favourite foods, our culture, language, religion etc.

Additionally, we all designed a personal crest showing some aspects of our identity also. We told everyone in the class why we were wearing our outfits and then we visited some other classes too. It was a really fun day!

Making Chapatis

We were using stories to learn all about life in different parts of Asia. As part of this, we read 'What Shall I Make?' by Nandini Nayer. We decided to make chapatis just like Neeraj in the story. To help us with this, we invited in Naraen's mum Rama to give us some hints and tips about making chapati. It was really good fun and we learned lots and lots!

The Rights Factor!

Today we did our performance for the Rights Factor!  This is always one of the highlights of Human Rights Month and this year was no different!  Check out our wonderful singing below!  The song is based upon the book 'Whoever You Are' by Mem Fox that we read in the first week.  We've learned a lot about human rights and equality since then! :-)

Musical Patterns

Today we watched a video that showed us how to make musical patterns in an aab style.  Could you think of any other words you could use?

No Gender Stereotypes in Senior Infants!

We were talking all about gender stereotypes today. We discussed some stereotypes that exist about colours, toys and activities for boys and girls. We looked at some photos showing the gender stereotypes in the world around us.

Image from http://www.trendsactive.com/#!/news/gender-stereotypes/

We decided we weren't going to use stereotypes in our classroom and tell other people when they use them - 'Don't be silly, that's a stereotype!'.

Ai, ay and a_e sounds!

We watched an episode of Alphablocks today to revise both the 'magic e' rule for a and the ai/ay sound. Remember shy i doesn't like to be at the end of a word so then toughy y takes his place!

Making Patterns!

We were making patterns today. We watched this video from Sesame Street to start us off thinking about patterns.

Then we played this game where we had to continue patterns.

Could you create your own patterns from scratch? Give it a go with some shapes here!

There Were 10 in the Bed

We watched this maths song today. It's a good way to start thinking about all the different ways to make 10! For example, 9 and 1 make 10. How many can you think of?

Autumnal Trees inspired by Jasper Francis Cropsey

Today in art, we were inspired by the American artist Jasper Francis Cropsey. We looked at some of his paintings of the Hudson valley in autumn time and used his colour scheme to create our own autumnal trees using both painting and printing.

Check out our work below. :-)

Describing a polar bear!

We wrote a description of this bear today. We did a great job and remembered all the types of sentences that you need when describing.

Could you describe the bear using...

... a colour sentence?
... a size sentence?
... a position sentence?
... a number sentence?
... an action sentence?
... a feeling sentence?
... a shape sentence?
... a texture sentence?

Human Rights Month - Learning about Deafness

As part of our work on disability for huma rights month, we have been learning a lot about people who can't hear very well. Sometimes, these people are called deaf people.

First of all, we read a book called Moonbird. This told the story of a young prince that couldn't hear earth sounds. He visited some animal friends and they showed him how to communicate with his hands. When he returned to earth, the king and queen learned how to talk to him using their hands and eyes too.

Then we read Freddie and the Fairy. This story is all about a fairy who can't hear very well so she sometimes mixes up the wishes that the boy is asking for. This book taught us the 3 Golden Rules for speaking to someone who can't hear very well - speak clearly, don't cover your mouth and always face towards the person.

Today, we read A Birthday for Ben. This book is about a boy called Ben who hates birthday parties because he feels left out of the games that need music. He even decides that he doesn't want a party for his own birthday because he doesn't want his deaf friends to be left out. Luckily, his mother comes up with lots of ways to make sure that everyone can join in all the party games by using lights and coloured cards as signals as well as music.

We also looked at the First Animal Sign Book today. We learned all the signs for the animals in the zoo. It was great fun!

Old Mother Hubbard

Our new rhyme for this week is Old Mother Hubbard.

Here are some of the verses we will be learning!

Counting Fun!

Today we were practising counting up and back from ten with the Angry Bird song.

We also practised counting the correct number of spots for the ladybird!

Numbers Help Me Count!

Here's a really nice video we watched today all about how numbers help us count! It was great fun!

We Are All Born Free

We read 'We Are All Born Free' in school this week.

We learned about some of the rights that all humans should enjoy. You can watch a video showing some of these here!

Remember, everyone has rights so everyone also has the responsibility to protect other people's rights!

Shopping Lists!

We were learning all about shopping lists today. Here are the rules we came up with for writing a shopping list!

Underwater Treasure

We were practising our counting up to 10 today - being really careful to only say one number word for each object.

We had great fun playing the Underwater Treasure game. You can play it again by clicking on the picture!

What are Children's Rights?

We watched a really nice video today that taught us all about what children's rights are. We learned that children have a right to go to the doctor, to clean water, to go to school, to healthy food, to believe what we wish and most importantly, the right to PLAY!

Whoever You Are by Mem Fox

The senior infants read this lovely book in class today - Whoever You Are by Mem Fox. It taught us about how despite our differences, all the children around the world share lots of similarities. Here's a video of someone else reading the story.
