Making Play Dough - A Class Recount

We used the photos we took when we were making play dough to create a recount. We tried really hard to use time connective words like first, second, next, after, then, after that, finally, in the end etc. We did a really good job. You can read our book here! Now we're all authors! :-)

Making Play Dough

We have been working on forces in Science this month. We looked at the forces behind floating and sinking and today we were looking at pushing, pulling (and a little bit of gravity!).

We looked at the forces used to play with some toy cars, a marble game, Tiddly winks and a wooden fox toy.

The best way to try out all of the different types of forces though was with play dough so we decided to make some for ourselves!

If you want to make some more at home, our recipe was....
2 cups of flour
4 tablespoons of cream of tartar
2 tablespoons of cooking oil
1 cup of salt
2 cups of water
Food colouring

You can check out some of the photos from today here!

Capital E

Today we learned how to write capital E!

Alphabet Books

During Arts Week, we created an alphabet book. Everyone did one letter each and then we put them all together into a book!

First we chose the design for our background, created a large capital of the letter using whatever material we liked and finally we decorated the page with some words beginning with our letter.

It was a lovely project and the book looks great!

Tricky Word Games Again

In stations today, we were doing an unscrambling game with our new list of tricky words. If you want to play it again, click here

You can also play another game where you need to find the correct tricky word here...

Today we were learning about Nelson Mandela. If you want to learn some more, you can check out the BBC website about him. There are a lot of words though so you will need an adult with you to help you read it.

If you want to complete more of the challenges, you can go to them by clicking on videos.

 Then you click on games.

 Have fun!

During November, we were learning vocabulary related to 'School'. Some people have fogotten one or two so you can revise them here!

You can use the class account (user name:seniorinfants@live.co.uk password: _betns123) or even better make your own account so it remembers the ones YOU get wrong!

'Ir'

We've been learning the 'ir' and 'ur' sounds this week. We were watching this video at snack time but some people had to leave so Cecelia promised to put it on the blog so they could watch it at home. Enjoy!

Frosty the Snowman!

We are learning the song Frosty the Snowman for the winter concert! It's all about a snowman that comes to life so it's perfect for winter time!

There are a lot of words to remember so you can practise it here at home!

Tuesday 3 December 2013

Making bird feeders!

We made bird feeders for the birds around the school because it's getting colder and colder as we get deeper into winter and during winter it can be hard for birds to find enough food. We stirred some bird seed into gelatine and used cookie cutters to make nice shapes. We left them for a few days to dry and then we hung them up on the trees outside the school.

Be sure to keep an eye out for them in the morning - I wonder will we see the birds eating them? How exciting!

Pinocchio!

Today we read the story of Pinocchio.

We used the story to practise our reading strategies - predicting, connecting and creating images. We also started a new strategy of self questioning using the language 'I wonder why ...', 'I wonder where ...'  and 'I wonder what ...'

Domino Flash Patterns 1-9

Today we were working on recognising domino flash patterns for 7,8 and 9 as well as 1-6. These ones were a bit trickier but we did a really good job recognising them! You can practise more at home by watching this video!

There was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly

We are learning this rhyme this week. We really like the doctor's funny dance at the end!

Arts Week Compositions

As part of our homework for arts week, we composed our own songs.

We were able to either use the music from a song we knew and create new lyrics or completely make up our own song. Here are our wonderful compositions!

Little Music Makers

During arts week, the senior infants were lucky enough to have workshop with Maria from Little Music Makers. We got to practise our singing, keeping rhythm and even playing instruments like a real orchestra! It was great fun!

Tuesday 26 November 2013

We are Composers!

Today we were composers! We all played an instrument to create a piece of music representing a storm. There was rain, wind, thunder and lightning. It got louder and louder (forte) and then, when the storm calmed, the music got softer (piano). When we were finished, we listened to the music back and created a score to represent it. A score is a special way of writing down music so that others can copy your music if they want to. Here are our video and score!

Monday 25 November 2013

Arts Week!

Today was the first day of Arts Week! This is a week where we focus on all the arts subjects - music, visual art and drama! We planned the Alphabet book we're going to make, made some bird feeders to feed the birds on these wintery days, planned how we are going to paint our glass shakers and listened and responded to 'March Past of the Kitchen Utensils' by Vaughan Williams. You can listen to it again here!

Recount Writing!

Today in English, we did some early analysis of a recount. Here's what we came up with.

We'll be amending and fine tuning our definitions in the next week or so but for now.....

Could you think of a recount using this structure?

A Present from Honey Potts!

Copernicus brought us a present today! Ms Honey Potts was so happy with our science investigation on finding the best material for some waterproof bears' clothes that she sent us a very cool gift.

It's called hydrophobic sand and that means that it's sand that never gets wet! At first we didn't believe it, but we tested it out and it's true! When it goes into the water, it all sticks together and it looks like it's wet but then when you take it out it's actually dry and powdery! It was very cool!

Here's a video of some hydrophobic sand in action!

Investigating 3D shapes

We were investigating 3D shapes today. We wanted to see which shapes could stack, slide and roll. We found out that only shapes with curved faces could roll and only shapes with flat faces could slide and stack.

We listened to this song too which helped us learn about the shapes.  We learned from the song that cuboids are also called rectangular prisms!  It was a fun lesson!

Sa Seomra Ranga

Rinneamar Photostory inniu de na focail go léir a bhímid ag foghlaim an seachain seo caite. Seo dhaoibh an fís!

Ar dtús, chuir Cecelia ceist orainn (mar shampla, cá bhfuil an siosúr?) agus má bhímid in ann í a fhreagairt, bhí seans againn griangraif den rud a thógáil.  Tar éis é seo, chuireamar na pictúirí go léir isteach i Photostory agus rinneamar taiféad de pháistí ag cur agus ag freagairt na ceisteanna.  Bhí a lán obair le déanamh againn ach ar deireadh thiar thall, d'éirigh muid é a chríochniú!

Féach ar an fís anseo!

This Little Piggy

Our nursery rhyme for the week is 'This Little Piggy'.   We love the piggy going 'Wee wee wee wee wee wee wee wee wee' all the way home!

The Alphabet!

Here is a song we watched today to help us remember which capital letters go with which sound!

Capital I

Today, we learned capital I! Capital I starts with a door. All it needs is a roof and a floor.

Investigating materials to make waterproof clothes!

In Science today, Copernicus gave us a letter that his friend Honey Potts had sent us. Honey manages a bear's clothes shop but lately the bears were complaining because even though their clothes are very nice, when it starts raining, they get wet.

Honey sent us some materials to test to see which would be the best for their new range of waterproof clothes. We tested nylon, wool, linen, cotton, leather and plastic.

We made sure it was fair by putting 4 pipettes of water on each material.

We found out that leather and plastic were the two best materials to keep out water. Nylon was the worst.

Tomorrow we'll be discussing our results a bit more and writing a letter back to Honey to tell her which materials we would recommend.

The Three Little Pigs

We listened to 'The Three Little Pigs' today and we created images while Cecelia read the story! Here's the story we read!

Can you remember any of the images you created inside your head?

In my mind I see....

In my mind I hear....

In my mind I feel....

When you're finished creating your own images, you can read along with the story here.

And watch it here!

Here's what happened afterwards!

And here's a different version of the story....
