Photography Fun On Our Field Trip!

We went on a really fun field trip today! We went to visit a field to see if we could find the plants that we'd been learning about for the past two weeks. We each had a treasure hunt card and we had to try find all the plants on the list. When we found them, we had to take a photo of them. Check out some of our photos here! 



















We did great on the field trip so it's no wonder then that we won the Greenwave photography competition! A piece of good news came through yesterday telling us that our photo of the hawthorn bud burst had been chosen as the best of all. As a result of this we get a digital camera for the school! Fintan was very pleased with us! :-)

Designing and Making Shakers

Today, we designed and made some shakers using the natural materials we gathered on our field trip. 

 A lot of people decided to use stones and pebbles as they made a louder noise but some people chose grass and plant material for a softer swoosh!

Conserving Water

For the past few weeks, our Learn Together assemblies have been focussing on water. 

Today was the final day when we looked at all the different ways to conserve and protect water. 

We learned a lot about what wastes water and also what pollutes water (makes it dirty).  

Everyone in senior infants is going to try very hard to be a Wise Water User!

Horse Chestnut Bud Burst!

Spring has really hit Balbriggan this week! 

We saw the primroses last week, a hawthorn bud burst and we noticed on Friday that the horse chestnut was really close to opening. 


And then.... this morning when we checked, the bud had burst!

Now we need to look out for the bud burst of the ash and the arrival of the swallow!

The Water Cycle

We were learning about the water cycle in assembly today. 

We were all disgusted to realise that the water we were drinking might one time have been inside an animal - and might even have been urinated out by it! YUCK!!!

Luckily the water is cleaned before it gets to us! 

The journey of a drop of water was really interesting though.

Sorting Living Things

In Science today, we were sorting living things into bird, insect, mammal and plant. 

It was very funny because sometimes Cecelia would move the pen by accident and the creatures would escape and hide down the conveyor belt! 

We laughed and laughed!

Looking after your teeth!

Today, Dan was teaching us all about looking after our teeth. 

We learned that you need to brush your teeth at least twice a day with a toothbrush and some toothpaste. 

You also need to brush your teeth for at least two minutes. 

Here's a song to help you with this. 

If you sing the whole song TWICE over - that makes two minutes!

Greenwave Project

As you may know, our class is currently participating in the Greenwave project for schools. 

 This involves measuring the weather and watching out for signs of spring arriving in the area. 

 The six signs are: 
- Primroses blooming 
- Frogspawn 
- Bud burst of ash tree (emergence of the leaf at the end of the branch) 
- Bud burst of horse chestnut tree (emergence of the leaf at the end of the branch) 
- Bud burst of hawthorn tree (emergence of the leaf at the end of the branch) 
- Arrival of swallows. 

 Over the midterm break, please keep an eye out for these happenings. If you spot any of them, please email cecelia.class@gmail.com (or comment here!). If possible, please also take a photograph and send it on to accompany it as Greenwave are also running a photography competition for schools this year too. 

 Primroses and hawthorn can be found in the hedgerows around Balbriggan, including the hedges beside our school. You will find ash and chestnut trees in the park behind St. Peter & Paul’s church carpark and also in the small park to the left of the church. Keep an eye out for swallows nesting in sheds or warehouses. You may be lucky enough to find frogspawn in ponds or ditches, but please be careful when you are near water.

Senses Stations!

On Thursday, we had stations in science. 

We were learning all about our senses so we had 4 different stations focussing on four of our senses - taste, smell, sight and touch (we'll be doing hearing this week!).

Investigating with our senses!

In Science class today, we did an investigation using our senses. Copernicus had gotten a call from the manager of Tescos saying that people weren’t buying their muesli any more. He wanted us to help him find out why. 

We examined the Tesco muesli with all of our senses – how it smelt, looked, sounded, felt and (most importantly!) tasted.  Here's what we said...

We thought it was nice but felt we could do a better job! 

 We used a selection of ingredients to create our very own muesli – bran flakes, oat flakes, flaked almonds, raisins and dried apricot. 


 We each decided what amount of each ingredient we would use (or none of some in the case of the people who didn’t like raisins!). 

We all felt that the muesli we had made ourselves tasted better than the Tesco muesli. We just haven’t decided yet whether or not to give Tesco our fabulous new recipes….. :-)

Making Play Dough - A Class Recount

We used the photos we took when we were making play dough to create a recount. We tried really hard to use time connective words like first, second, next, after, then, after that, finally, in the end etc. We did a really good job. You can read our book here! Now we're all authors! :-)

Making Play Dough

We have been working on forces in Science this month. We looked at the forces behind floating and sinking and today we were looking at pushing, pulling (and a little bit of gravity!). 

We looked at the forces used to play with some toy cars, a marble game, Tiddly winks and a wooden fox toy. 

The best way to try out all of the different types of forces though was with play dough so we decided to make some for ourselves! 

If you want to make some more at home, our recipe was.... 
2 cups of flour 
4 tablespoons of cream of tartar 
2 tablespoons of cooking oil 
1 cup of salt 
2 cups of water 
Food colouring

A Present from Honey Potts!

Copernicus brought us a present today! Ms Honey Potts was so happy with our science investigation on finding the best material for some waterproof bears' clothes that she sent us a very cool gift. 

 It's called hydrophobic sand and that means that it's sand that never gets wet! At first we didn't believe it, but we tested it out and it's true! When it goes into the water, it all sticks together and it looks like it's wet but then when you take it out it's actually dry and powdery! It was very cool!

Science Week 2013

Today was the finale of Science Week 2013! We had been doing fun science experiments with Copernicus during the week and today we concluded with a huge science extravanganza where the 6th class children taught all us lucky senior infants the wonders of science! Check out our video here!

Investigating materials to make waterproof clothes!

In Science today, Copernicus gave us a letter that his friend Honey Potts had sent us. Honey manages a bear's clothes shop but lately the bears were complaining because even though their clothes are very nice, when it starts raining, they get wet. 






Honey sent us some materials to test to see which would be the best for their new range of waterproof clothes. We tested nylon, wool, linen, cotton, leather and plastic. 




We made sure it was fair by putting 4 pipettes of water on each material. 





We found out that leather and plastic were the two best materials to keep out water. Nylon was the worst.  





Tomorrow we'll be discussing our results a bit more and writing a letter back to Honey to tell her which materials we would recommend.

The Marvellous Melting Icemen!

In Science on Wednesday, we met Copernicus. He's a scientist and he loves to hear us talking about all our different ideas in science. 


 Together, we carried out the experiment that we had planned on Monday. 

 We put three cubes of ice into each bottle and wrapped one of them in cotton wool. 


We even put some cotton wool on top like a hat!


We learned that science always has to be FAIR so we made sure to put the same amount of ice into each bottle and to put them in the same place. 



We worked hard while we were waiting for the icemen to melt.






When we checked them, the one without the coat had all melted but the one with the coat still had ice cubes in it!  We couldn't believe that the coat of cotton wool had actually made the snowman melt slower! Most of us had guessed faster! 
It turns out cotton wool is an insulator - it keeps warm things warm and cold things cold! 

 Next week we'll be designing and making an insulating cover for our drinks so that we can keep them nice and cool to quench our thirst! Start thinking now about what you're going to use! :-)
